brief

The brief entailed a new shed for the Royal Danish Fine Arts Sculpture School. The shed is to be used for the lathe, undercover outdoor working space and general storage.

design response / concept

Located in a walled garden in the middle of the city the design idea was to create a hidden oasis, a secret garden. The school had a lot of stone sculptured fragments from the previous parliament building which had burnt down. The garden was encouraged to grow in an unrestrained manner to act as the artistic counterpoint to the scattered sculptural fragments. The shed was designed as a lightweight timber building comprised of lots of thin timber members to enhance the ephemeral nature of the building to allow vines to grow up and around the building. The result would be a romantic overgrown garden punctuated with small ruins.
